Dr. Douglas Edwards, Associate Professor of Philosophy, receives 2023 Harold T. Clark, Jr. Award
The Clark award, named for Harold “Tom” Clark Jr., a former member of the Utica University Foundation and past chairman of the Utica University Board of Trustees, has come to be recognized as one of Utica University’s highest honors for scholarship among the faculty.
Douglas Edwards, associate professor of philosophy at Utica University, has been selected as the recipient of the Harold T. Clark, Jr. Award.
Each year, Utica University awards an outstanding associate, full or distinguished professor in recognition of their record of scholarship, professional accomplishment, and the potential for further excellence.
The Clark award, named for Harold “Tom” Clark Jr., a former member of the Utica University Foundation and past chairman of the Utica University Board of Trustees, has come to be recognized as one of Utica University’s highest honors for scholarship among the faculty.
The award will allow for a grant to encourage and continue creative professional accomplishment. The $2,000 fund may be used in direct support of a research project.
The recipient is chosen by a committee consisting the two immediate past year recipients of the award and Utica University’s Provost.
“Douglas is, without a doubt, one of the most prolific and distinguished scholars at Utica University. Having not yet reached the mid-point of his career, he has published three books (with top presses), eight book chapters in edited collections, and fifteen articles in some of the most prestigious journals in his discipline,” said Interim Provost Stephanie Nesbitt.
At Utica University, Professor Edwards works primarily on issues in meta physics and the philosophy of language, with particular focus on truth.
He is the author of “The Metaphysics of Truth” (Oxford University Press, 2018), “Properties” (Polity Press, 2014), and the editor of “Truth: A Contemporary Reader” (Bloomsbury Press, 2019). Professor Edwards also completed a book on philosophy and professional wrestling, called “Philosophy Smackdown” published by Polity Press in 2020. His book “The Metaphysics of Truth” was awarded the American Philosophical Association's Sanders Book Prize in 2019.
Edwards has also published numerous articles in leading philosophy journals, including The Journal of Philosophy, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Analysis, and Synthese. He is also an Associate Editor of the journal, Analysis.
Edwards received his PhD from the University of St. Andrews. Prior to Utica University, he held positions at University College Dublin, the University of Aberdeen, and Hamilton College.
